At North Lakes Academy, we believe some of the most meaningful learning happens when students have opportunities to experience, explore, question, and discover. Our partnership with Osprey Wilds Environmental Learning Center strengthens that commitment by making environmental awareness and experiential learning important parts of the North Lakes Academy educational experience.
 

Osprey Wilds serves as the authorizer for North Lakes Academy, but the connection extends beyond its formal authorizing role. Both organizations share a commitment to helping students develop meaningful connections with the world around them. Osprey Wilds emphasizes environmental literacy and experiential education, while North Lakes Academy incorporates those principles into a K–12 learning environment designed to educate and develop the whole student.

 

Connecting Learning With the Natural World

Environmental education at North Lakes Academy is not limited to a single class or occasional lesson. Instead, we look for opportunities to connect students with nature and their environment through meaningful, age-appropriate experiences.
 

Depending on grade level and curriculum, students may participate in outdoor field trips, nature-based activities, scavenger hunts, horticulture projects, science electives, outdoor exploration, and opportunities to observe natural events firsthand.
 

These experiences help make learning tangible. A scientific concept becomes more meaningful when a student can observe it. Questions raised in the classroom can lead to exploration outdoors. Students have opportunities to make connections among science, the environment, their communities, and their own everyday lives.

The Value of Experiential Learning

Experiential learning encourages students to become active participants in their education. Rather than simply receiving information, students are given opportunities to observe, investigate, collaborate, solve problems, and apply what they have learned.

About Osprey Wilds Environmental Learning Center

Osprey Wilds Environmental Learning Center is a nonprofit environmental learning organization based in Sandstone, Minnesota. It has provided environmental and outdoor education programming since 1971 and became a charter school sponsor in 2003 as a way to further its educational mission.
 

Today, its Charter School Division authorizes Minnesota charter schools with an emphasis on both academic achievement and environmental literacy. Its authorizing mission is to help ensure strong academic and environmental literacy outcomes while encouraging school communities to develop a connection and commitment to the environment.
