COLLEGE/CAREER READY

FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid - is now open! Seniors and senior families please start this important step at https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa

Who fills out FAFSA? - Current seniors and students in college. This is an annual application with both parents and student sections. You should be able to indicate whether both parents are filling it out, or if one parent is filling it out. If parents are divorced, then the custodial parent is responsible for filling out the FAFSA. The custodial parent is the parent you live with most of the time.

What do I need to complete the FAFSA? - You will need a copy of your parent's tax return, as well as your own tax return if you worked last year. You will also need your social security number or alien registration number (if you aren't a U.S. citizen). The FAFSA will ask for the names of schools where you are seeking admission. Although schools can be added later, it is always best to know where you want to go before working on the form.

Tips for FAFSA Success:

  • Always expand on your answers if possible: At times in the application there will be extra space provided to expand upon your answer. Doing so can help provide a clearer picture of your finances and what you can actually afford to contribute toward college costs.

  • Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool: This is a great way to save time when filling out the FAFSA. You can click the “Link to IRS” when prompted to fill in your tax information in the financial information section of the FAFSA, and your data will appear on the form.

  • Choose your college list carefully: Schools are most likely to give merit-based aid to students who are in the top 20% of their applicants. You can find out if you fall in this category by viewing the entering class stats on College Factual.

  • Develop a budget: Developing a budget with your family and deciding how much money you are willing to take out for loans will help you make a decision on which school to attend.

FREE APPLICATIONS for Colleges:

October 28 - November 1st - All Minnesota State colleges and universities are waiving their application fee October 28-November 1, with most waiving fees the entire month, making it a great time to submit your application. If prompted for a promo code, applicants should use “CKM2019.”

All MN Private Colleges (w/exception of Macalester) provide FREE applications always.

RESOURCES & INFORMATION:

How to Instill Gratitude

Did you know that listing out a few things we are grateful for each day can have a positive impact on our mood, attitude, and relationships? What are some ways to implement gratitude? According to the Big Life Journal, we can practice to:

  • Notice the good

  • Pause to notice and "take in" the beauty of a sunset

  • Appreciate random acts of kindness that others are offering or doing

  • Stop to admire nature

  • Listen to the sounds around you that can create calm or find wonder in it

  • Be authentic when you are truly thankful for what is happening, what you have, or what you are doing

  • Volunteer as often as you can

SOCIAL MEDIA AWARENESS:

What is the Tik Tok App?

  • It is a music video social media platform that combines lip-syncing, built in video effects, and social media

  • Users can watch clips of others or create clips, edit them, and add special effects

  • The most popular videos feature lip-syncing or dancing

What parents should know about Tik Tok?

  • Tik Tok app has more downloads than Snapchat, Spotify, and Gmail combined

  • The Tik Tok app mixes self deprecating humor with the latest pop music, making it popular with students

  • There are only two privacy settings on the app

    • Private: only the creator can watch their videos

    • Public: anyone on the app can see their videos

  • By default, all accounts are public unless the privacy settings are changed

  • Tik Tok can allow strangers to direct message your children

How can parents help their student use Tik Tok safely and appropriately?

  • Monitor and have a dialogue about the apps your students are using

  • Always be on the apps your students use. No monitoring app is better than having a regular digital safety conversation with them

  • If your student already has a phone, ensure that they ask for permission before downloading and using any new apps

  • Have your student teach you about any new apps they want to download. Then do some research on your own to determine if the app is safe for your family to use

  • Remind your children that their online activity (even under a fake username) can have impact on who they are - try to post and be proactive in only creating posts that help the student shine

More information regarding Tik Tok can be found at Smart Social.
